A bunch of visually handicapped students from Model School for the Visually Handicapped (MSVH), National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Visual Disabilities-Divyangjan (NIEPVD) Dehradun, Uttarakhand have taken on a different route to design their life and achieve their dreams. With the entry of their Sports Teacher Mr.Naresh Singh Nayal in 2015, sports became an important part of their daily routine at the institute. As a qualified Coach from Sports Authority of India East Centre Kolkata, Mr. Naresh guided and trained them systematically and scientifically.Though it was not easy for him in the beginning but the zeal of the students to learn made him work with determination. The journey started with the trust winning game first. The students tried to judge their Sports Teacher through touch and witty cross questions.
Once they started trusting the coach, there was an increase in number ofstudents attending the sessions. Mr.Naresh took the sessions regularly in the mornings and evenings to make the students ready and confident enough to participate in competitive events. The interest of the students increased with the selection of Pankaj Rana in the Indian Blind Football Team for the Asian Blind Football Championship in December 2015.The very next year saw the turn of their Sports Teacher becomethe Indian Blind Football Team Goal Guide and Assistant Coach. Two more students, Sandeep Singh and Sovendra along with Pankaj Rana were selected for the Tri-Nation tournament at Kochi Kerala in 2016.The two other nations participating were Laos and Malaysia. They were followed by Ashwani Kumar,Mehraj,Shivam Singh Negi. In 2017, they won National Blind Football Championship under Pankaj's captaincy.
As more players were getting selected Indian Blind Football Team regularly, it was time to go one level up . Team went a level up in the form of two goals scored by Shivam Singh Negi in Asian Blind Football Championship at Pattaya Thailand against Malaysia in 2019.
Sovendra Singh Bhandari (B1 Category), because of his excellent performance not only in Blind Football, but also in Nagesh Trophy, got picked for the Indian Blind Cricket Team for India-Nepal series of ODIs and T20s in 2019. When these celebrations were on, there was one more good news in the month of February 2019 as Gambhir Singh Chauhan (B3 Category) got selected in Indian Blind Cricket Team from CABI(Cricket Association of Blind in India).
Apart from sports, running was another area where these students got invaluable input from their coach sir. The medals won by boys and girls of the Institute in National Sports Meet for the Blinds, organized by Indian Blind Sports Association (IBSA), at Delhi in 2018 provided a lot of inspiration to other students. Raveena Sharma (T-12) won three gold medals in her category and Neeraj Chauhan (T-13) took all the challenges in middle and long distances events and won two gold and one silver medal. Students also started to take part in road races along with sighted runners and many of them were podium finishes, which motivated others too to participate in such races. Saurabh Sharma, Deepak Rawat, Sneha Domuga and Tara Patwa are few popular students who have inspired their juniors in school and other places to participate in such events.
As was the dream of Naresh Singh Nayal, sports have become an integral part of culture in the Institute now. He has set his aim higher now and wishes his students to represent India in Paralympics and many other sports. It is still a long way to go, but the Coach and his students are determined and ready to take on the challenge.
