DW BUREAU / cHANDIGARH "The brave heart family of deceased Kuldeep Singh gave us the greatest gift anyone can give - a second lease of life to my mother as a result of their courageous decision for organ donation. No words can convey our gratitude. We just can't thank the donor family enough," stated the son of one of the kidney recipients who was discharged after a successful recovery post transplant here at PGIMER on Wednesday. Expressing his indebtedness to the donor family, Prof. Jagat Ram, Director PGIMER stated, "It is an extremely hard decision for anyone to make when you are put in that situation, but families like that of deceased Kuldeep Singh definitely instil a sense of confidence not only in the in-waiting recipients fighting a losing battle but also for the Cadaver Organ Donation Programme. I think you develop a different level of respect for the donor family, for their spirit of unconditional love amidst their own pain. There cannot be a better teaching in humanity than organ donation." The life of Kuldeep Singh from SAS Nagar, Mohali, came to an abrupt end as he was declared brain dead at PGIMER following a fatal head injury. But thanks to the selfless gesture of Organ Donation by his family, Kuldeep Singh's passing away kindled hope for two terminally ill renal failure patients. The one being a 31 old woman from Mauli Jagran and the other one a 62 year old woman from Mohali. Detailing about the recipients, Prof. H.S. Kohli, Head, Deptt. of Nephrology, PGIMER, said, " Before the transplants, both the matching recipients were suffering from the last stage of debilitating kidney ailment and had been dependent on dialysis for long. Their chances of survival without a kidney transplant were dismal and donor Kuldeep Singh has been a saviour to them in his death." It was the night of 30th January, Kuldeep Singh was on his way to home after work when he was knocked down by a speeding two wheeler coming from the wrong side, leaving him with grievous head injuries. Kuldeep Singh was immediately rushed to the civil hospital, Kharar for initial treatment, from where he was referred to PGIMER and was admitted here in an extremely critical condition the next day on 31st January. But Kuldeep Singh's week long hard fought battle with life came to an end as he succumbed to his injuries and was declared brain dead on 8th February following the protocols of THOA here at PGIMER. Showcasing exemplary courage and altruistic spirit, the family of Kuldeep Singh did not let this tragic death go in vain and consented for organ donation when the transplant coordinators raised the matter with them. "He was not only my father; he was the family's life force. Maybe the Almighty also needed this 'noble soul'. Even in his death, he has done the same what he lived for by helping the lives of two others. He will continue to live amongst us through them." said Maninder Singh, the elder son of the deceased donor, while trying to hold her own tears. Sharing his emotions Professor Vipin Koushal, Nodal Officer, ROTTO PGIMER said, "I think you develop a different level of respect for the donor family, for their spirit of unconditional love amidst their own pain.
