category Regional, chandigarh, , tags Regional, chandigarh, , DW BUREAU Chandigarh As Punjab witnessed an escalation in stubble-burning incidents, the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in Punjab Vidhan Sabha, Partap Singh Bajwa on Wednesday exhorted the Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab to examine its own failures before going strict on farmers. Senior Congress Leader Bajwa said that Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann must explain to the people of Punjab why he failed to provide the cash incentive of Rs 2500 per acre to farmers to manage paddy residue despite his promise. He (Mann) should also explain why he reneged from his promise to procure moon crop at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for two continuous seasons. The AAP government even failed to provide the machinery relating to crop residual management , Bajwa added. Bajwa said that the majority of the farmers of Punjab are small and marginal. They can t afford to buy expensive machinery. However, the farmers with bigger land holdings have bought such machines. The Mann government remained miserably unsuccessful in ensuring the availability of machinery for such farmers through cooperative societies. Punjab CM should get sensitised on this issue. It s not the farmers who are solely responsible for the stubble burning. It is a policy matter that the AAP government lacked , Bajwa added. The opposition leader said that the AAP government doesn t even comply with the Supreme Court s directions to provide a Rs 100 quintal incentive to the farmers for managing stubble.
