Complainant turns hostile, gets 6 months in jail

While giving this information here today, a spokesperson of Anti Corruption Bureau, Haryana said that in the year 2013, a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act was registered in Panchkula against Paramjit Singh, meter reader of Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited, for taking a bribe of Rs 3000 from the complainant Vikram Singh, a resident of district Ambala. After completion of the investigation, the challan was given in the court of the Additional Sessions Judge, Jagadhari, Yamuna Nagar. The court on 18.02.2015, had convicted the accused Paramjit Singh and sentenced 2 years in jail along with a fine of Rs 2000. It is noteworthy that if a government official demands a bribe in lieu of official duty, then a complaint is made to the Anti-Corruption Bureau. After this, on the basis of the complaint, the bureau team catches that official red-handed accepting a bribe. By registering a case, the Anti-Corruption Bureau presents its challan in the court, but in this case, the complainant and the shadow witness turned hostile in the court. This happened when on the basis of his complaint, the accused was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe. The court has taken a tough stand on the change of statement. In this case, after turning away from the statements given by the complainant Vikram Singh and the shadow witness Ranbir Singh, the Bureau filed a petition in the court for taking action against both of them as per Section 340 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. According to the decision given by the court on 21.01.2023, both Vikram Singh and Ranbir Singh were sentenced to 6 months imprisonment and a fine of Rs.1000 under section 193 of the Indian Penal Code.
